Lavon, Pinhas
(1904-76)
   Israeli labour leader. He was born in eastern Galicia, and was one of the organizers of Gordonia in Galicia and Poland. In 1929 he settled in Palestine, where he was secretary of Mapai in 1938-9, and later general-secretary of the Histadrut. He served in the government as minister without portfolio (1950-2) and minister of defence (1953-4). He was involved in the dispute within Mapai which led to a split in the party.
